Qmbrella transforms lonely gray rainy days with light, sound and movement. It’s connected to your personal music player, and driven by the played music. Includes three headphone outputs, to share with your friends under the same umbrella. Rechargeable batteries, waterproof circuit

Project background
.
As part of the Industrial Design Career, we where introduced into clothing design by the university in 2008. It was something like a short fashion course, and at the end some students had a chance to expose their work on a famous runway.
Even if I hated it, the work had to be done, and that’s how Qmbrella was built.
PS: Hey, NO offense against true – full time fashion designers, I’m just making joke of my university’s marketing trick.

Construction

It took 2 days, 48 blue LED’s, and meters of telephone wire. Sorry by the smiley FELA, I don’t like to post family photos here!
Detail of the headphone jacks (Blue for you, Pink for your Girlfriend, and Green for your Mistress haha!)

Various people testing it
My friend Jorge testing it, when it was still a handheld device (2008)

Before hanging it from the roof

The name Qmbrella comes from the Q-value related with graphic equalizers.
After the presentation the prototipe was left collecting dust. Batteries, iPod and headphone connections where removed. Today is hanging on the bedroom roof as a strange lamp, but the music system is still working.
